Establishment of luxury and curiosity

According to Wikipedia, 'Menagerie' is the term for a historical form of keeping wild and exotic animals in human captivity and therefore a predecessor of the modern zoological garden. The term was foremost used in seventeenth century France originally for the management of the household or domestic stock, but later primarily for an aristocratic or royal animal collection. The French-language "Methodical Encyclopedia" of 1782 defines a menagerie as an "establishment of luxury and curiosity" Later on the term was referred even to traveling animal collections that exhibited wild animals at fairs across Europe and the Americas.

Cultural program

Our perception of each other and of our environment as humans as well as the understanding of the social, conscious and sub-conscious mechanisms around it all play a strong role in the menagerie's cultural agenda.

Curetted and organized by David Luxembourg and Daniela Pais the cultural program itself deals with crossing borders between the large creative spheres of art, design, architecture, fashion, film, theater and dance with interdisciplinary exhibitions, performances, creative meetings, lectures and workshops from local, national and international figures and establishments.

Title: 'Street' - Homage to Mark Boyle,
Performed by David Luxembourg.

Mark Boyle is a Scottish artist known for his work in the cultural UK Underground of the 1960s around the Traverse Theatre and as a pioneer of light shows in music, producing light environments for Soft Machine and Jimi Hendrix.

His best known work, however, continues to be 'a Journey to the Surface of the Earth'. Begun in 1964, this work encompasses many different series & projects involving various random selection techniques to isolate a rectangle of the Earth's surface.

Attached to this work are series of human and social studies dealing with how to make the best visual description our senses and minds can achieve from a random sample of the reality that surrounds us.

'Street' is one of those studies.

Title: "We like to paint."
Contemporary landscapes by Lennard and Martin Schuurmans

Fashion objects by Daniela Pais
With special thanks to: Yoad David Luxembourg

The meeting of two different worlds within design, applied in the form of two brothers. The first a successful illustrator, residing in Amsterdam and has a beautiful portfolio that has been built by working for several large names in that profession, the other is working hard on establishing himself within industrial design and studies at present in the Design Academy of Eindhoven. Respectively: the brothers Lennard & Martin Schuurmans. These two brothers had never before worked together until they were invited for designing the setting to a photo shoot with Dutch actress Carice of Houten in the head role (To be seen in Elle Mode, March 2008 issue). From that particular moment a fertile cooperation arose, one that can now be witnessed in the hall of Menagerie. Specially recreated for the opening of the Smalle Haven and the Menagerie these two super heroes have melted together their abilities and their pleasure with one strong motive in mind: "we love to paint!"

Title: 'A man about'
By Alvin Ho / Hoko studio

"The invisible is much more present then the visible,
we just have to look beyond the thing-ness of things."

'A man about' began as a quiet diversion, away from what we humans had understood and experienced. it wished to pursue an approach of design that draws a re¬newal of sensations and expectations, to go beyond the act of design itself and seek individually a return to unknowing, where we discover new questions and realities in the midst of our everyday life.

Based in the Netherlands and Singapore, Alvin Ho is motivated by observations of both the everyday and invisible interactions between audiences and objects. Drawing the quiet and the quotidian back into our sensibilities, he places upon the audience a broader analysis of what it means to exist in a thing-based environment, thereby articulating the atmospheric and impalpable sensations that remain to be uncovered

Video Installation 2
Title: 'A Schizophrenic Design Conversation'
By Seton J. Beggs

An installation which consists of three very personal and extreme points of view about design of which the artist have come upon over the course of his design studies. Seton, who is very pro-design, James who is very anti-design, and Beggs, who believes design is all about personal taste and opinion. The three personal alter egos have an audio-visual conversation and it is up to the guest to listen and watch these three opinions and to eventually make up their own mind as to which of these three they agree with.

Seton J. Beggs is an enthusiastic, creative person, with a keen interest in clever, sometimes provocative, but always fitting design, which he combines with his skillful graphic and motion-graphic design abilities.

His graduation project 'A Schizophrenic Design Conversation' (2006) has earned him honors and nomination to the 'Rene Smits' and 'Melkweg' awards.
